Academy overview
The Ascona Choral Academy warmly welcomes choir enthusiasts to spend an inspiring week in Ascona, refining their choral singing skills in a supportive and musically rich environment.
The academy's main focus is on existing vocal ensembles. Additionally, there are a limited amount of places for individual singers, who can participate as part of an ad-hoc choir.
Each day includes rehearsals focused on music that will be performed in the evening during the evensongs — a cherished choral tradition rooted in the Anglican Church.
Afternoons are dedicated to additional rehearsals and a variety of workshops.
Topics may include ensemble singing, voice and ear training, conducting, improvisation, and composition, offering participants a well-rounded and immersive musical education.
The daily rhythm of learning and performing new music enhances technical skills, ensemble awareness, and musical expression.
Throughout the week, rehearsals are led and supported by Nigel Short—artistic director of the renowned professional choir Tenebrae—and other experienced course instructors.
Participants may either arrive on Sunday and enjoy a complete week of choral singing and workshops. Alternatively, a shortened academy from Wednesday is also possible.
All activities take place in and around Ascona and Locarno, set against the beautiful backdrop of Switzerland's southern Ticino region.
On Thursday and Friday, participants can also attend concerts by the Tenebrae Choir from London, offering world-class choral music performances.
The week culminates on Saturday with a festive final choral day, where all choirs come together to sing in the streets of Ascona, creating a joyful, open-air musical celebration.
In the evening, a final concert will be held, with select choirs performing alongside Tenebrae — an unforgettable highlight to close the Academy week.

Participation
Is the academy suitable for children's and youth choirs?
The daily rehearsal and performance of new repertoire is rather demanding for children. Therefore, the academy is less suitable for children's choirs, but well suited for ambitious youth choirs.
How many participants will there be?
A total of eight choirs will take part in the academy. The goal is to recruit five existing choirs and form three ad-hoc choirs.
Is everyone participating at the final concert?
Due to the space restrictions, Dvořák Stabat will only be sung by a selection of the choirs. However, the ones who are not singing in this concert are performing at in streets of Ascona during the day.
Is there a reduced course fee for the shortened week?
No, the course fee remains the same and primarily covers the administrative costs of coordinating participants.
Which ad-hoc choir should I register for?
Consider whether you could learn the sample pieces during a two-hour choir rehearsal with only minimal individual preparation. If so, then this is the right choir for you.
My choir is registering for the academy. Do I need to register as a singer too?
No. Your choir will communicate directly with you.
Are there limited places?
Yes, there are limited spots for choirs and singers. The participation is confirmed after a short review process.
